Writing well takes practice. You can quickly master it if you dedicate some time each day.

Writers always have a purpose with their work, following one of the three P’s. Which one are you?

1. PUBLISHING

When running a poetry account on Instagram, you can easily fall into the habit of wanting to publish everything you write. This may work for you, if that’s your goal. But make sure that you are happy with the quality of your work – once it’s out in the universe, the impression it makes is out there forever!

2. PRACTICE

Without knowing it, many writers are writing to improve their skills. Retrospect is a great way to judge the quality of your work. That’s the benefit of not publishing straight away. In the moment, you may feel like you’ve written something awesome – a few weeks later, you’re kicking yourself for ways you could have made it better.

3. PLEASURE

And of course, all writers write because they love it. If you don’t enjoy it, this will show in your work. Write in a way that you enjoy and don’t feel like there are certain rules you must follow. The best poems break boundaries and offer something new. Offer your own voice instead of trying to sound like everyone else.

There’s a lot of crossover between the three P’s – and in fact, it’s beneficial to hit all three. Practicing different methods will help you find the style that brings you the most pleasure. Then once you’ve found your voice, publish your poems. If it’s enjoyable for you to write, it’s likely it will be enjoyable to read.
